Biography
Like many post-war players, Scottish full-back Charles Archer came and left the Showgrounds without a trace at the start of the 1947/1948 season.
Born in Glasgow and like many of his generation was enlisted to serve in the armed forces throughout the Second World War, enlisting in the Navy enjoying success in army football whilst registered with junior side Shettleston Violet from the Scottish junior ranks.
Following his demobilisation, he was recruited by Ballymena United manager - and fellow Scot – Bob McKay in July 1947 to form part of his new look team for the 1947/1948 season, with the formal return of the Irish League. Archer signed the same day as fellow countryman William Spalding, both on professional terms.
The versatile Archer made just eleven appearances for the Braidmen following his debut in the dramatic 6-4 win over Bangor to kick the season off. With his inconsistent form he lost his jersey and was eventually dropped down to the Reserves in the late Autumn, and by February had returned home to his native Glasgow for personal reasons.
Ballymena United held onto his registration, and were open to negotiations with any Scottish clubs that were interested – but there is no known record of Charles Archer playing competitive first-team football after his final game for the Sky Blues in November 1947.
In the years that followed, he moved to the United States with his family to start a new life in Michigan.
Charles Archer passed away in July 1988 in Oakland, Michigan – aged 65.
