Biography

Larne born County Antrim Shield winning full-back who joined from Newry City in 2011.

Thrust into the mix of Irish League football as a sixteen year old with his hometown club, Ross quickly looked comfortable in Jimmy McGeough's Larne side with senior players twice his age. Black spent a season at Glenavon during 2006/2007 playing alongside his older brother, Aaron, for the first of many times in his career. He returned to Larne in June 2007 (again alongside brother Aaron), staying for their final season in the top tier before the newly restructured IFA Premiership started.

Ross joined ambitious Newry City in 2008 ten managed by Gerry Flynn, in his first season they reached the final of the League Cup, losing out in the final at Mourneview Park to Portadown. The Border side were relegated at the end of the 2010/2011 following financial issues that had plagued the club. After three seasons and numerous managers, Ross was released at the end of his contract that season.

There was a mass exodus from the Newry Showgrounds following relegation, Ross and team-mate David Munster opted to join Roy Walker's new look Ballymena United side for the 2011/2012 campaign - soon joined by his brother again too. Disaster struck the full-back early in the season though as he would only manage five games before injury ruled him out until January. By the time of his next appearance in January 2012, Walker had gone to be replaced by Glenn Ferguson. Black finished the 2011/2012 season strongly with United rejuvenated under their new manager.

The following campaign, seen Black pick up his first senior winners' medal as he was part of the United side that won the County Antrim Shield against Linfield at the Oval on penalties in November 2012. The team struggled to build on that success for the remainder of the season and in February 2013, despite being a regular in Ferguson's starting eleven ' his contract was surprisingly cancelled by mutual consent to allow the defender to once again link up with his brother (who had come out of semi-retirement) at Amateur League side Wellington Rec. His spell at Warden Street ended with 43 appearances and one goal (v. Donegal Celtic in August 2011).

After ending the 2012/2013 season with Wellington Rec. a move back to the town's senior club, when Larne boss Graham McConnell lured Ross (and Aaron) back to Inver Park for a third spell at the Championship 1 side in August 2013. A spell of almost nomadic lower league participation followed for Ross as his spell at Larne was followed by one season at Championship Loughgall (2014/2015) and then another at ambitious Amateur League side Rathfriland Rangers (2015/2016).

Ross Black started the 2016/2017 at Stuart King's Banbridge Town but moved mid-season back to Rathfriland, following the appointment of brother Aaron as manager following Paul Kirk's departure.
