Biography
Local full-back Samuel Armour was a pre-war trialist who played one game for Ballymena United.
Born in Kells, Samuel Armour was spotted plying his trade in the popular summer football leagues. It was in the summer of 1939, whilst playing for the Legion team that the then 20-year-old full-back signed for top local Intermediate club Summerfield for the 1939/1940 season.
Armour quickly impressed and was called up for a trial with the senior club Ballymena United in September 1939, as selectors needed a full-back to step in for the absent John Fullerton for a trip to Newry Town. It wasn’t a vintage debut for Samuel, who was on the wrong side of a 5-2 scoreline at the Newry Showgrounds.
It proved to be his only appearance for the Sky Blues, as he returned to Summerfield as a regular starter on the back-line. Despite the outbreak of the Second World War, Armour remained with the Flixton Park club for the next two seasons, delivering reliable and complementary reviews before fading away from Intermediate football at the end of the 1941/1942 season.
Unfortunately, little is known of Samuel Armour’s life and football career after this point.
