Antrim born striker who spent his youth football career at Cliftonville playing alongside the likes of Liam Boyce and also representing his county at the Milk Cup tournament.
Signed by outgoing Reserve Team manager Clifford Adams, 19-year-old McCabe was quickly elevated to Glenn Ferguson's first team at the start of the 2012/2013 season, with a shortage of attacking options available for the manager ' he called upon James for his senior Irish League debut in August 2012 against Crusaders at Seaview. His next appearance, from the bench against Lurgan Celtic in the League Cup, produced his first senior goal in the final minute of a comfortable 4-1 win.
The teenager's first season in senior football would prove a success with 23 appearances for the Sky Blues, albeit only two more goals followed (both against Lisburn Distillery in October 2012), James also came off the bench in extra time to help end United's 23 year trophy famine when the Sky Blues defeated Linfield in the County Antrim Shield final at the Oval in November. The signings of forwards Shane Dolan and Gary Liggett limited opportunities during the second half of the season and also into the next campaign.
Despite becoming a trusted and reliable member of Reserve team in 2013/2014, he was only called upon for a handful more appearances in the Sky Blue colours during his time at the club, missing out on a place in the panel for the Irish Cup final against Glenavon. However in his final appearance, he captained and scored for arguably one of the youngest ever United line-ups against Ards the week before the showpiece final in April 2014, with Ferguson resting his entire first team panel as precaution.
Following his inevitable release from the Braidmen, he was quickly snapped up by Larne boss David McAlinden in July 2014 to spearhead his Championship 1 promotion campaign. The Inver Park side struggled to break into the promotion places during the next three seasons with McCabe used both as a forward and on the right side of midfield, making over 75 appearances for the East Antrim side.
