Biography
Albert Austin was a Scottish one game wonder in the 1936/1937 season, who was fortune to survive a torpedo attack in WW2.
Born in the Springburn district of Glasgow to a Scottish father and his Ballymena mother, Albert moved to Brougshane during his childhood and was a talented all round sportsman in athletics and also represented Ballymena Cricket Club.
Despite not having a known career in junior football, in January 1937, aged 23 - he was drafted into the Ballymena United senior team for his only senior appearance in the 4-0 away defeat to Belfast Celtic. The winger failed to make a lasting impression against the champions elect, in a season where the Braidmen would finish bottom of the Irish League.
That game proved to be the only note of Albert’s short career in football – as shortly after he enlisted to serve in the Second World War and survived a torpedo attack off the coast of Ireland.
Albert Austin passed away in December 1978 in London, aged 65.
