Born and raised within the town of Ballymena, Beggs was the youngest of ten – but had quickly risen through the ranks of local football with Summerfield in his late teens. He played for both Summerfield and had a spell with another Intermediate club, Victoria Rangers during the 1927/1928 season. It was during the popular ‘Summer Leagues’ in the town, where Beggs caught the eye of the Ballymena selection committee.

He was called up to the senior ranks for a trial game in October 1931, replacing the injured David Nelson in the Ballymena FC midfield for a derby game against Coleraine at the Warden Street Showgrounds. Ballymena comfortably won the league game 7-0, but despite the victory Beggs was harshly singled out as ‘not coming up to scratch’, by the Ballymena Observer newspaper, whilst also acknowledging the jump from Summer League football to Senior football.

It proved to be Joseph’s only fleeting competitive appearance in the sky blue colours, he tried his luck in a trial game during the following summer of 1932 but was not signed on Amateur forms for the 1932/1933 campaign. He continued to play locally within the town, but little is known of his footballing exploits after that bittersweet Autumn win over the Bannsiders.

Joseph Beggs passed away in Newtownabbey in January 1981, aged 71.
