Biography
One of a dozen goalkeepers utilised during the 1930/1931 season – Strabane born Patrick McCann failed to grasp his short-lived opportunity in senior football with the Sky Blues.
The Tyrone native appeared for his local side Strabane Athletic in the North West league in the early 1930’s alongside James O’Reilly – who had played with Ballymena the previous season; his performances jettisoned him quickly to the eye of selectors for the league’s select team in February 1931, where he starred in a representative game against their Scottish counterparts.
This quickly caught the attention of the Ballymena FC selectors, who needed a new goalkeeper as they had failed to suitably replace Irish Cup winning custodian John Gough the previous summer. McCann was signed as an amateur in the same week as former Accrington Stanley keeper John Blake, but I was Patrick who was gifted the first opportunity between the sticks at the Showgrounds.
It would prove to be his only appearance for the club in a 4-4 City Cup stalemate with Portadown in February 1931, with the local press less than impressed with an inauspicious debut from the new player. There was no second opportunity for McCann, as selectors quickly moved onto trying Blake between the sticks before again circling back to their original choice of James McKean for the remainder of the 1930/1931 campaign.
Patrick returned west to Strabane Athletic and reappeared the following season as an outfield player, even playing a trial game in pre-season for Derry City at outside forward but failed to convince the Brandywell club that he was for them. He continued to play outfield and two years later had another unsuccessful trial at League of Ireland club, Dundalk in September 1933.
The Portadown game proved to be Patrick McCann’s only foray into senior football, as little is known about the remainder of his life or footballing career.
