English born midfielder signed on a short term loan deal by Gary Erwin during the 1994/95 season.
Born in Warrington, Brooks was snapped up by Wigan Athletic at the age of 10 and in 1991 signed professionally with the Lancashire club at 16. The Latics were a constant figure in the fourth tier of English football yet the teenager failed to find a way through to a first team debut whilst at the club.
Matthew's progress was also hampered by a double leg break which kept him on the sidelines for 14 months.
In November 1994, the final year of his contract at Wigan Athletic, he was offered the opportunity of a short term loan deal in Northern Ireland. Newly appointed Ballymena United manager Gary Erwin sought to reshape his team in a bid to avoid relegation from the Irish League but after two forgettable appearances in defeats to Cliftonville and Distillery - the deal was not extended.
After being released by Wigan, Brooks relocated to the United States firstly playing and then turning to coaching in the New Jersey area, where he currently remains to this day.
