Match Report

BALLYMENA United gained their first ever victory at Milltown Playing Fields, thanks to goals from Matthew Tipton and David Cushley.

Five minutes into the game and Warrenpoint had a chance after Stephen Hughes passed to Stephen Murray, but Jim Ervin made an excellent block.

Just after the half hour mark Tony Kane had a long range effort with his left foot, but the ball went just over the bar. Seconds later Matthew Shevlin found Kane on the edge of the box and he knocked the ball across for Matthew Tipton to tap it in and put the Sky Blues ahead.

A few minutes before the half-time break Kane sent another left foot effort in but it went just past the post of former Ballymena keeper Aaron Shanahan. The home side then had a good chance to level the scores through a Mark Hughes header, but Dwayne Nelson saved at point blank range.

United opened the second half with a free kick just outside the box, David Cushley smashing it low into the net from the edge of the D to give the visitors some breathing space.
That didn't last too long though, as some poor handling by Nelson, coupled with bad defending, allowed Stephen Hughes to pull a goal back.

Johnny Taylor had a chance to get on the scoresheet on 69 minutes but managed to scoop the ball over the bar from a yard out.
Nelson had to be alert as Warrenpoint had several good chances as the half wore on, rushing off his line to deny both opportunities.

The game ended on a sour note as Point player Stephen Moan was shown a second yellow card by referee Arnold Hunter for a poor challenge on Matthew Shevlin.
