Match Report

UNITED had to come back from a goal down to earn a late draw, as Gareth Rodger scored deep into injury time against Ballinamallard today.

Ballymena started on the front foot as an early free kick was awarded close to the edge of the box, unfortunately David Cushley overhit. The visitors soon had chances in the first 20 minutes, but keeper Dwayne Nelson gathered both shots.

Just after the half hour mark Willie Faulkner had a weak shot gathered by the Mallards keeper Alvin Rouse. Moments later both sides were down to ten men as Michael Ruddy lunged at Shane McCabe with a two footed tackle, whose reaction seen him shown a red by referee Evan Boyce, joining Ruddy for an early bath.

Ballinamallard sub also received a yellow card on the bench for showing dissent.

Just before half-time Matthew Shevlin required treatment after getting a knee in the face from Rouse, but the young player was able to continue.

Cushley grabbed the first chance of the second half and tested the keeper with a low drive, but Rouse gathered easily. Ballinamallard test Nelson a few times, then Eoin Kane had a shot from distance but it came to nothing.

United took off Willie Faulkner and brought on Mark Magennis for his league debut, the former Harland & Wolff player having been serving a suspension carried over from the end of last season.

The Mallards broke the deadlock in the 66th minute as Michael McCrudden latched onto a loose ball and struck home. The Braidmen almost levelled the score moments later but Shevlin seen his header tipped over the bar.

The game could have been sealed for the visitors with less than 20 minutes to go as Nelson faced two Ballinamallard players but they wasted the chance. This was followed shortly by some great football from United, but Magennis missed the target by a huge margin.

As the end of the game approached Eoin Kane forced another save from Rouse and Cushley hit the bar in injury time, before loan signing Gareth Rodger smashed the ball into the net to earn a draw.
