Match Report

RANDAL Reid justified his manager Tommy Wright's faith with a goal on his full debut - but Ballymena United are still awaiting their first away win of the season after being held to a 1-1 draw at Limavady United today.

In the absence of first choice strikers Paul Brown (injured) and Kevin Kelbie (suspended), Wright opted to pitch the rookie frontman into his starting line-up alongside Austin Friel - and the 20-year-old responded by heading Ballymena into a 34th minute lead from Mark Picking's cross.

Stephen Parkhouse's towering header eight minutes into the second half earned Limavady a point but Wright insisted his side deserved more.

"The players are absolutely gutted not to have won that game and I don't think anyone could realistically argue that should have been the case.

"My players responded brilliantly to last week's result and the support they received from the fans was fantastic - hopefully what they saw will have made the supporters' journey home a bit more pleasureable than in recent away games."

Despite difficult conditions - a torrential downpour just before kick-off left the playing surface sodden - both sides served up a fairly entertaining game.

Limavady had the better of the early exchanges with Stephen Lowry and Tony Shields both having efforts on goal, only to find that United keeper Paul Murphy's handling was impeccable in the slippery conditions.

And instead it was Ballymena who took the lead in the 34th minute. Mark Picking somehow got the beating of both left-back Martin Cutmore and an awkward bobbling ball to get to the bye-line and cut back a cross which was met with a textbook near-post header by Reid.

But the Roemen were level on 52 minutes when Cutmore's cross from the left managed to elude everyone in the penalty area except Parkhouse, who used the pace on the cross to direct a powerful header past Murphy from 14 yards.

Austin Friel had two chances to mark his return to Limavady with a goal but on 57 minutes, after brilliant set-up play by Aaron Callaghan, his hurried first-time effort was well off target and when he did fire a left-foot volley at the goals five minutes later, home keeper Michael Doherty was equal to it with a wonderful reflex save.

Limavady remained a threat with substitute Ryan Coyle's effort blocked by Murphy's legs, while Picking almost restored Ballymena's lead with a 25-yarder which clipped the top of the crossbar on its way over.

Ballymena knew it wasn't going to be their day when, with 10 minutes left, skipper Albert Watson's thunderbolt of a shot from a Picking corner looked destined for the net before it struck Martin Ferry in the face and went wide - a goal-saving intervention.
