Match Report

BALLYMENA United completed their CIS Cup campaign with a 3-3 draw at home to Limavady United today.

With Ballymena already eliminated from the competition, it took an equaliser from Kevin Kelbie - one of a brace from the Scottish striker; Paul Brown scored the other - to finally dent the Roesiders' hopes of making the knockout stages.

In keeping with the performances in the earlier part of the competition, United twice squandered leads and ended a manic first period by going in 3-2 behind.

United - who had 16-year-old reserve team striker David Cushley on the bench - took the lead in the 14th minute when Austin Friel's corner was powerfully headed home from 15 yards by Paul Brown.

Limavady were level within five minutes, however, when Ryan Semple, on the right flank, outsmarted stand-in left-back Darren Murphy and his cross was converted from close-range by Stephen Parkhouse.

Ballymena regained the lead on 32 minutes. Mark Picking's effort to cross from the right flank was shut off and the winger instead came inside onto his left foot and crossed for Kelbie to somehow out-jump keeper Alan Ryan and head home.

Remarkably, Limavady were back on level terms just three minutes later when Semple cut through the United defence and although keeper Paul Murphy kept out the winger's effort with his foot, the ball fell to Stephen Lowry who fired home the loose ball off the inside of the post.

And six minutes before the break, the visitors went in front for the first time when Martin Cutmore's deflected free kick beat Murphy and ended up in the bottom corner.

The second half failed to match the excitement of the first but Ballymena did force a deserved equaliser on 70 minutes when substitute Andrew Rosbotham's pinpoint free kick was headed home by Kelbie.

"We improved in the second half but we have to be disappointed at scoring three goals at home and not winning the match," said Ballymena boss Tommy Wright.

"It was a fairly disappointing CIS Cup but I firmly believe our performances deserved more points than we managed - that was entirely our own fault."
