Match Report

BALLYMENA United suffered a heavy 7-1 defeat at the hands of Glenavon at the Showgrounds on Wednesday evening as glaring defensive deficiencies were exposed time and again.

Glenavon took the lead almost instantly after winning a corner. Kyle Neill delivered the ball into the box which caused a goalmouth scramble before being prodded home by Rhys Marshall. Just nine minutes later it was two as David Elebert headed in from another corner, this time taken by Andy Hall.

The game was effectively finished as a contest with 20 minutes on the clock as Eoin Bradley pounced on a defensive mistake to tee up Kevin Braniff who confidently dispatched the ball beyond Alan Blayney. Braniff and Bradley again combined on 29 minutes with the later notching his first strike on the way to an eventual hat trick after the ball had failed to be cleared by the United defence after another Kyle Neill corner.
The visitors continued their utter domination in the second half and were unlucky not to make it five when Eoin Bradley struck the woodwork before Joel Cooper forced a fine save out of Alan Blayney. The only ray of hope for the Sky Blues was the introduction of teenage striker Matthew Shevlin who again showed his undoubted class with a well taken goal after a burst of pace to race clear of the Glenavon defence.

Not that the efforts of young Shevlin were to inspire his more experienced teammates as just minutes later United conceded one of the most embarrassing goals in the club's history when Andy Hall was given the freedom of Warden Street to waltz completely unattended right through on goal from his own half.

Eoin Bradley then took it upon himself to rub further salt into the wounds when he scored a stunning strike from outside the box to make it six before heading home Glenavon's seventh on 79 minutes from yet another Kyle Neill corner and resulting defensive mix up.

The Lurgan side had further chances to score as the game near its conclusion and but for some benevolent finishing it could and perhaps should have been double figures. United have some serous soul searching to do ahead of Saturday's home derby against Coleraine as the only player on the panel to come out of this debacle with an ounce of credit was 16 year substitute Matthew Shevlin, who must surely in the frame to start at the weekend.
