Match Report

Coleraine and Ballymena United produced an entertaining derby day clash at The Showgrounds but, ultimately, both had to settle for a point apiece.

United created the first effort of note after six minutes when Conor McCloskely tested Chris Johns on six minutes before played switched to the other end with Ciaron Harkin's first-time effort being directed straight at Ross Glendinning.

The visitors came close to finding a way through in somewhat fortunate circumstances with around a quarter-of-an-hour gone when a Gareth McConaghie attempted clearance almost ricocheting off a white shirt only to fall just wide.

Then, just after the half-hour mark, a Kyle Owens effort from distance was deflected wide for a corner while his header from the subsequent set piece scraped past an upright.

However, the deadlock was broken four minutes from the break courtesy of Jamie McGonigle's assured finish after being played through by Ian Parkhill's flick to make no mistake.

But United responded early in the second half after a Conor McCloskey throw-in from the right was flicked on by Owens before being turned into his own net by the unfortunate Aaron Traynor in a packed goalmouth.

Coleraine were inches away from restoring their lead on 77 minutes through substitute Eoin Bradley after he sent a low effort from a Darren McCauley cross just a whisker the wrong side of the right post.

Moments later at the other end a goalmouth scramble ended with Kevin Braniff touching the ball just wide before switched once more for Traynor to come so close from distance.
