Match Report

BALLYMENA United may have won at the Oval, but it wasn't good enough to progress in the Co-Operative Insurance League Cup.

The Sky Blues had given themselves an almost insurmountable challenge going into this third round second leg, having lost 3-1 at the Showgrounds last week; meaning Ballymena would have to score at least three in Belfast.

Showing no lack of confidence, the Braid men went on the attack from the off and Kevin Kelbie hooked a ambitious snap-shot well wide early on.

However, the Glens took the lead after just 23 minutes when the visiting defence failed to deal with a long clearance from goalkeeper Elliott Morris.

Andrew Waterworth easily got the better of the flat-footed Gavin McDonnell, before rounding the outstretched Alan Blayney, and tapping home into the empty net to put Glentoran 4-1 ahead on aggregate and seemingly out of sight in the tie.

The East Belfast outfit threatened to go further in front when Gary Hamilton's half-volley was dragged across the face of goal and the incoming Kyle Neill couldn't deal with the follow up, allowing the Braidmen to clear their lines.

Eight minutes into the second half, the scores were level though when Neill Teggart found space in the box to turn and the ball bounced kindly after the challenge from Sean Ward and the Ardglass forward poked the ball home from close range for his seventh strike of the season.

Straight away at the other end Gavin McDonnell again justified his recall to the side with a superb goal-saving block from a Daryl Fordyce effort, which kepts the score level.

The Sky Blues looked to have gone in front on 71 minutes when a Stuart King corner was fumbled by Morris and Gary Haveron tapped home from close range. However, referee Keith Halliday deemed that Thomas Wray had pushed the Glentoran goalkeeper.

Ballymena piled everything forward and Davitt Walsh forced a good save out of Elliott Morris when a blocked Stuart King effort fell to Walsh, who's half-volley was pushed out for a corner.

Then with two minutes remaining, Ballymena went in front in bizarre circumstances when Stuart King's cross-come-shot from the left slipped under the body of Morris.

Time beat the Braidmen though and despite the 2-1 victory - the score on aggregate stood at 4-3 to Glentoran; sending them into the quarter-finals of the League Cup.

"We threw everything at them - we had four forwards on by the end - and went for it but it wasn't to be," said United assistant boss Jim Grattan.

"We felt the referee was harsh with the disallowed goal - that's the sort of things that have gone against us."

"So far the Glens have been our hoodoo team, they seem to have that edge over us, but beating arguably the best team in the Irish League this season will give our boys a boost."
