Match Report

BALLYMENA United put clear distance between themselves and the dogfight at the bottom with this win at The Oval.

In a lacklustre opening period James Costello came closest to finding a way through when he turned and shot inside the area only for Aaron Hogg to save well.

Costello also came close around the half-hour mark with a half-volley just wide of the target after some poor home defending.

And the visitors threatened again before the break with a 30-yard Gary McCutcheon free-kick which Hogg turned over.

Into the second half United continued to look the most likely to score and eventually did so on 65 minutes when Costello crossed from the left for skipper to Allan Jenkins to power home a header.

Jenkins then repeated the feat just three minutes later with another header from a Rory Carson corner.

Glentoran grabbed a late consolation with a minute remaining when Richard Gibson tapped home the rebound of a long range Eamon Murray effort onto the crossbar.
