Match Report

BALLYMENA United's penultimate home fixture of the season ended in a two goal defeat for the Sky Blues at the hands of Glenavon, the visitors goals coming from Guy Bates and Mark Farren.

The opening exchanges had a real 'end of season' feel about them, devoid of any clear cut chances. The nearest either side came was when Glenavon's Niall Henderson had a close range effort superbly denied by the newly contracted Dwayne Nelson in the 16th minute. David Cushley could have put the Sky Blues in front soon after but poked his effort wide of the post when well placed to score.

The visitors did have the ball in the net on the half hour mark, but Guy Bates' finish was chalked off by the linesman's flag. Glenavon continued to press and came close once more when Kyle Neill's chipped effort was cleared off the line by United defender Tony Kane. The opener came on 73 minutes, a scuffed goal kick from visiting 'keeper Davy O'Hare somehow avoided every attempted United challenge before falling to Mark Farren who finished with aplomb, the ball nestling in the goal after striking the underside of the crossbar.

84 minutes on the clock, and the game was wrapped up. A careless ball given away by Alan Davidson in the middle of the park allowed Matthew Rooney to find Guy Bates, who turned David Munster with ease before slotting the ball past Dwayne Nelson to make sure all three points were heading to Lurgan.

In truth, this was a rather flat performance from Ballymena United, given the goal-filled displays in recent weeks. The Sky Blues will hope to put this disappointment behind them and get back to winning ways in their final fixture of the 2012/13 Danske Bank Premiership season at home to Dungannon Swifts next week.
