Match Report

BALLYMENA United made it ten goals in two games after a convincing 4-1 victory on the road at Donegal Celtic on Saturday.

United appear to have found their shooting boots just as the season reaches its climax, much to the bewilderment of supporters who had all hoped such performances could have been produced earlier in the season. The Sky Blues actually fell behind early on, a clumsy tackle in the area by David Munster felled Sean Cleary, who dispatched the resultant spot kick at the second attempt after an initial good save from Dwayne Nelson.

It didn't take long for the away side to respond, a floated cross from Gary Thompson resulted in an own goal off Donegal Celtic defender Mark Burns after David Cushley had challenged in the air. On 18 minutes, United had the lead. A through ball from David Cushley was dealt with by the head of DC goalkeeper John Connolly, who could only steer the ball straight into the path of United striker Gary Liggett, whose calm chipped finish gave his side a 2-1 advantage.

Six minutes later, the hosts should have been level. Striker Mark Miskimmin struck the post from inside the area but the rebound fell to former United man Paul McAreavey, who somehow ballooned the ball over the bar from all of six yards. United were unlucky not to extend their advantage later in the half when both the busy Gary Liggett and fellow striker Shane Dolan had opportunities which went astray.

Ballymena did manage to secure that elusive third goal in the second half when Shane Dolan turned in David Cushley's cross from the right hand side to give the Sky Blues some breathing space. Some gloss was added to the scoreline late on when substitute Alan Davidson's through ball found fellow replacement Alan Teggert, who rounded John Connolly before slotting home from an acute angle to make the score 4-1 and wrap up the three points. The only blotch on the day's events was a nasty looking injury suffered by captain Allan Jenkins, later confirmed to be ankle ligament damage, after receiving a nasty tackle from behind in his own penalty box.
