Match Report

BALLYMENA United were soundly beaten at Solitude on Saturday, as table topping Cliftonville put on a master class in the art of possession football.

The opener came as early as the ninth minute, a well worked team move resulted in Liam Boyce powering home his 30th goal of the season from the edge of the area. Moments later United could have been level, only for Ronan Scannell's goal-line clearance to prevent Alan Teggert from equalising.

On 22 minutes, Scannell made it 2-0, slotting the ball past Dwayne Nelson from inside the box after linking well with strike duo Liam Boyce and Joe Gormley. The third goal came four minutes after the interval, another scintillating team move allowed Stephen Garrett to steal a march on the United defence and knock the ball past the despairing Dwayne Nelson. Ten minutes later it was four, Liam Boyce's inch perfect cross was headed home by Ciaran Caldwell to put the result beyond any doubt.

Further gloss was added to the scoreline on 72 minutes when Liam Boyce was allowed to score a tap-in, adding to his impressive now 31 goal return this season. A point of concern for United was an injury suffered by goalkeeper Dwayne Nelson after a collision with the crossbar. Without a 'keeper on the bench United were forced to see out the closing stages of the game with outfield player Mark Surgenor in goal.

In reality, this was a fixture from which United never expected to pick up three points, but it was the manner of the defeat, not by the first time this season to such a heavy score, that does not sit well with Sky Blue supporters. There is not let up in the action for United who will be keen to restore some pride at home to Portadown on Easter Tuesday, please note this is a 2.30pm kick off.
