Match Report

AN EMBARRASSING performance from Ballymena United saw them soundly beaten 7-0 against Glenavon at Mourneview Park on Saturday.

The hosts opened the scoring as early as the 5th minute. Full back Brendan Shannon took advantage of some poor defensive positioning to thump the ball past despairing United goalkeeper Dwayne Nelson and into the net. The second followed on 14 minutes. Indecision from Chris Rodgers allowed Guy Bates to hook the ball in the direction of Ciaran Martyn who coolly slotted home to double his side's advantage.

On 35 minutes, Glenavon made it three. Brendan Shannon's forward pass allowed Mark Farren to wander right through the heart of the United defence and knock the ball past the incredulous Dwayne Nelson. The Sky Blues almost pulled one back just before half time but Allan Jenkins' thumping header rebounded off the frame of the goal after Tony Kane's cross.

There was no let up in the scoring for Glenavon in the second half, who made it four on 54 minutes. Kyle Neill's free kick was met by the head of United substitute Gary Liggett who unfortunately steered the ball past Dwayne Nelson and into his own net. The fifth arrived barely six minutes later, and what a goal it was. Gary Hamilton's overhead kicked cross was finished in equally acrobatic style by Marc Brown drawing applause even from some of the away support.

The Lurgan Blues extended their advantage even further on 66 minutes, Gary Hamilton's free kick from the left-hand side was headed into the net by the impressive Kyle Neill. Glenavon's seventh and final goal came with 80 minutes on the clock, some sloppy defending from Michael Ruddy was punished by Guy Bates who looped the ball past Dwayne Nelson from the edge of the area.

In all, this was a thoroughly underwhelming afternoon for Ballymena United who left Lurgan with their heads between their tails after yet another heavy defeat this season. All eyes will be on Donegal Celtic at the Showgrounds next Saturday (3pm), where the players know they owe the fans a big performance.
