Match Report

A GOALLESS affair at Stangmore Park left Ballymena United frustrated as a plethora of chances went astray.

The Sky Blues started brightly, rattling the bar on two separate occasions within the opening minutes. Firstly, Gary Liggett had an effort palmed onto the cross bar and out for a corner before Gary Thompson rattled the woodwork moments later.

On 22 minutes, Tony Kane swung in a cross from the right but Gary Thompson's resulting header was directed straight at Swifts 'keeper Curran. Soon after, captain Allan Jenkins spurned a glorious chance when he fired over first time from inside the box.

United continued to press and the busy Tony Kane almost saw a repeat of his wonder-strike at The Oval a fortnight ago only on this occasion Curran was equal to it.

The second half saw United exert further pressure, with striker Gary Liggett unlucky not to register a brace. Shane Dolan could also have opened the scoring only to miss-kick when well placed on the edge of the area.

In the end, an inspired performance from the Swifts goalkeeper kept United at bay, who left the pitch frustrated at their inability to register on the score sheet. A trip to Windsor Park to take on champions Linfield awaits the Sky Blues on Saturday (3pm).
