Match Report

BALLYMENA United succumbed to a disappointing 4-1 defeat against Glenavon at Mourneview Park on Saturday, alarmingly this was the Sky Blues' fifth league defeat in a row.

The hosts started brightly and took the lead with just six minutes on the clock thanks to a deflected Guy Bates free kick. United's response was immediate, a scooped through ball from David Cushley was brought under control by Jamie Davidson, who finished low into the right hand corner of Andy Coleman's net.

Glenavon soon regained a foothold in the game and begun to press forward with alarming frequency. United's makeshift defence was looking vulnerable, with Guy Bates in particular giving the visitors' backline a torrid afternoon.

On 39 minutes, the home side took the lead once more. Niall Henderson's curling free kick was met by the head of Lurgan Blues skipper Kris Lindsay who knocked the ball past United goalkeeper Stuart Addis.

Glenavon held a well earned lead at the break, and set about extending their advantage in the second period. Ciaran Martyn got on the end of an Andy McGrory through ball after more good work from Guy Bates to make it 3-1 and ensure a comfortable afternoon for the hosts.

Substitute James Costello's 'goal' was then adjudged to not have crossed the line by the linesman, despite his protestations that it had. Jamie Davidson's corner was met by the head of the enigmatic United striker who nodded it goalwards from the edge of the six yard box only for the referee's assistant to wave play on.

To further rub salt into United's wounds the impressive Guy Bates added his second and his side's fourth on 83 minutes, with a placed shot from just inside the area. Question marks remain over whether Stuart Addis could have done better to protect his near post on this occasion.

The final whistle blew almost to the relief of the travelling United contingent, who feared an even more emphatic scoreline. The side's performance must collectively improve if the Sky Blues are to stop the rot by getting a result at The Oval next week, with fears mounting that five defeats on the bounce could become six.
