Match Report

BALLYMENA United slipped to a fourth successive Danske Bank Premiership defeat at home to Portadown on Saturday, two second half goals from Kevin Braniff cancelling out Chris Rodgers' eighth minute opener.

United started brightly, and after good work from David Cushley, James McCabe shot straight at Portadown goalkeeper David Miskelly with captain Allan Jenkins blasting over the resulting rebound. Shortly after, the Sky Blues took the lead. Tony Kane's impressive cross found the head of Chris Rodgers who headed home his first goal in a United shirt.

The visitors almost levelled the scores on 11 minutes only for Stuart Addis to pull off a stunning save to deny Darren Murray's goal bound looping header.

David Cushley was proving a real test for Ports' right back Chris Casement, and in one exquisite move, played through Alan Davidson from a seemingly impossible angle only for the Warrenpoint man to shoot a tame effort, easily saved by the busy Miskelly. Cushley again was the provider just a minute later when he found James McCabe in space in the box but he headed the ball straight into the ground from point blank range.

Cushley could have scored himself on 25 minutes when after a mesmerising piece of skill which took him past two defenders with one flick of the boot, he shot just wide of Miskelly's far post. The former Lisburn Distillery man was again involved on the strike of half time, in a flowing move involving Alan Davidson and Ally Teggert, the latter becoming the latest to be guilty of a poor miss.

United's productive first half display was unexpectedly followed by a flat second, with a lack of rhythm and shape proving detrimental to the team's performance. Kevin Braniff equalised for Portadown on 50 minutes after a powerful strike from the edge of the area. The goal was marred in controversy however as United's Mark Surgenor was lying stricken on the centre circle whilst the visitors ignored calls to halt play. Braniff then prodded his team in front just ten minutes later after getting on the end of Chris Casement's low cross.

Alan Davidson had a number of long range efforts dealt with by the impressive Miskelly, as United struggled to carve out any real goalscoring opportunities after falling behind.
