Match Report

BALLYMENA United bounced back in style at the Showgrounds today, recording a first victory over Crusaders in 12 games after an 82nd minute winner from James Costello.

A slow start soon came to life on 17 minutes when match winner James Costello found space in the box only to fire over from an acute angle. This proved a wake up call to Crusaders who took the lead eight minutes later. A poor clearance from Dwayne Nelson proved costly, as former Sky Blue favourite Gary McCutcheon nipped in to fire the visitors in to the lead.

United refused to allow their heads to drop and responded almost instantly. A slip in the Crues defence allowed Alan Davidson to collect the ball and slot coolly past Sean O'Neill to draw the home side level.

Crusaders were unlucky not to retake the lead on 36 minutes when Jordan Owens powered a header goalwards, forcing an acrobatic Dwayne Nelson to tip the effort on to the cross bar. United's Davy Munster then had an even better chance but his free header from just six yards somehow flew wide of the post when it appeared easier to score.

The Crues had the better of the initial stages in the second period, with McCutcheon firing a over-head kick high and wide from close range. United were next to threaten when Alan Davidson's powerful shot from 20 yards forced a good save out of O'Neill after good build up play involving Gary Thompson.

United were on the up and continued to press, the introduction of wingers Ally Teggert and Neil Lowry appeared to give the side fresh impetus going forward. On 82 minutes, a short corner found Alan Davidson, whose rasping effort was fumbled by Sean O'Neill, allowing James Costello to head home from six yards.

A nervy final ten minutes were played out, a late counter attack from Neil Lowry should have resulted in a third goal, only for the teenager to shoot straight at O'Neill after a lengthy run from inside his own half.
