Match Report

BALLYMENA United battled back from 2-1 down to earn a deserved point at Shamrock Park, a second half penalty from Ally Teggert earning the away side a share of the spoils.

Mark Surgenor fired United into an early lead with just three minutes on the clock after a flowing team move. Aaron Stewart floated in a high cross, which was helped on by Munster, before McCabe picked it up and did well to find Surgenor who rifled home from all of six yards.

The visitors lead did not last long, Portadown striker Darren Murray levelled after the ball broke free in the box from a corner. United bounced back, and were unlucky not to take the lead after long range efforts from Gary Thompson and Ross Black.

Portadown then begun to turn the screw and took the lead on 34 minutes, Darren Murray nipped in between Dwayne Nelson and the United defence to put the home side in front.

United started the second half with fresh impetus and had decent shouts for a penalty turned down on more than one occasion. Ironically, it was through a penalty kick that the side drew level. Ally Teggert was brought down in the box by former United man Chris Ramsey, before confidently stepping up and slotting the ball home to level the scores once more.

Prior to this, Dwayne Nelson had been forced into an acrobatic save after a powerful effort from Jamie Tomelty stung the hands of the United stopper.

United then had a decent spell of pressure and went in search of a winner, but their dominance failed to come to fruition and it was in fact the home side who finished the stronger, ensuring a nervy final few moments for the United defence.

In the end, a draw was probably a fair result, however concerns are beginning to mount that United are without a league victory since the 30th August.
