Match Report

BALLYMENA United succumbed to a humiliating 4-1 defeat in the derby game against Coleraine at Ballycastle Road.

The visitors actually had the better start, young striker Jamie Davidson's thunderous effort crashing back off the crossbar as early as the sixth minute. If any United fans were thinking that this was a sign of things to come, they couldn't have been further from the truth.

Captain Allan Jenkins was forced off with just 10 minutes on the clock through injury, Mark Surgenor replacing him in an unfortunate early reshuffle. United carved out no further goalscoring opportunities in the first half and just as they appeared to be heading into the interval on level terms, disaster struck. David Scullion crossed to Darren Boyce who had found space in the box to tap the ball home to give his side a deserved lead.

Fresh from a half time rollicking you would have expected United to have begun the second half with aplomb. However, no such fightback materialised and the second period passed with the same miserable lack of intent as the first.

It was on 55 minutes that Coleraine doubled their lead, midfielder Michael Hegarty slotting home a tidy finish to the home fans delight. Eight minutes later it was three, Curtis Allen teeing up David Scullion to extend The Bannsiders advantage even further.

A fortuitous penalty was then awarded to the home side after Mark Gillan appeared to be held back in the box. Despite Curtis Allen's confident run up, the impressive Dwayne Nelson was a match for it to keep it out and maintain the three goal scoreline.

United then found a glimmer of hope on 84 minutes when after finally managing to take a half respectable corner, they ironically found the net through the tenacious Gary Thompson.

Any hope of a stirring fightback was quickly extinguished when Curtis Allen atoned for his earlier penalty miss to make it 4-1 to the home side and compound a miserable day at the office for United.
