Match Report

AN OPENING day victory few would have prayed for, but the heavenly performance which followed sent the Sky Blue faithful home in delight.

With a threadbare squad depleted by the loss of NINE players, the odds were firmly stacked against Ballymena United as they opened their Danske Bank Premiership campaign against champions Linfield in front of a large crowd at the Showgrounds.

The home side started brightly, Ally Teggert unlucky not to send United into a 5th minute lead when he fired over from 8 yards. Barely a minute later, United really should have been one in front when Aaron Stewart volleyed over from inside the box.

Linfield were struggling, and a sharp turn and shot from James Costello troubled the Linfield goal further. On 44 minutes, United finally got their noses in front, young striker Jamie Davidson outpacing the ageing Linfield defence before coolly slotting past the stranded Alan Blayney.

Manager Glenn Ferguson replaced James Costello with Jordan Baker at half time, as United sought to extend their well earned lead.

It was the visitors however, who started the second half the brightest, monopolising possession for a 15 minute period despite never really threatening the United goal. The home side soon found their rhythm and put the Linfield defence under another spell of sustained pressure. Davidson fired over from close range before David Cushley's spectacular drive crashed back off the crossbar.

United continued to press, and were rewarded with a thoroughly deserved second goal, almost a carbon copy of the first, on 75 minutes. Young striker Jamie Davidson again out sprinted the Linfield defence before an ice cool finish to send the home support into raptures.

The final 15 minutes were comfortable as United saw out a memorable home victory.

An expectant crowd will travel to Seaview next Saturday hoping the Sky Blues can reproduce another exceptional performance, this time against Crusaders.
