Match Report

WARRENPOINT Town picked up a potentially crucial three points with this defeat of Ballymena United at Milltown to move out of the play-off spot with one game remaining.

Daniel Hughes almost fired 'Point into a seventh minute lead only for his rasping effort to crash back off an upright.

At the other end nine minutes later Allan Jenkins headed just over for the visitors.

Hughes had another chance on 22 minutes only to lob over Macauley Cairns' goal before flashing yet another effort wide just after the half-hour mark.

He then combined with Mark Hughes with ten minutes of the first half remaining but couldn't keep the shot on target while Ally Teggart might have handed United the lead just before the break only to steer his shot wide.

It was perhaps fitting when Hughes did fire Warrenpoint into the lead just after the hour with what proved to be the winner when he got on the end of a Stephen Hughes through ball to beat Cairns from 20 yards.

The Sky Blues might have levelled a few minutes later through a David Cushley half-chance while Darren Boyce headed just over with a similar fate also befalling another Jenkins nod in the closing stages.
