Match Report

Ballymena travelled to Newtownards last Saturday and met Ards under City Cup auspices. McKeen re-appeared in the Ballymena goal and Howard came on at inside-left in place of Shiels, who had not made sufficient recovery from an attack of 'flu to enable him to play.

Otherwise the team was the same as usual. Ards had out their strongest side, McGee, Duffy and Doherty reappearing, and this had the effect of improving the team immensely,

In the first minute Murphy sent behind and when Totten harassed Reid, but finally put the ball behind. Ards pressed, and the visitors' goal had a narrow escape when Burns whizzed a terrific shot past the upright.

A fine cross by Totten was missed by the home forwards, and Stewart conceded an abortive corner. Cassidy opened up for Ballymena, and play travelled to the home end, where Vance relieved.

Ards, however, returned, and from a Gough centre Wilfie Davidson opened the score after six minutes' play. A minute later Sidney Howard equalised with a fine drive which went into the top corner of the net.

Ballymena displayed neat footwork and were more effective in the open, but Gough forced a corner off McCandless and McKeen dropped a flag kick, but McCandless came to the rescue and cleared.

The home goal was assailed was assailed when the local defenders claimed offside, but Murphy made a poor attempt at goal, and Cassidy put over the bar. From Kilpatrick's centre Murphy headed against the bar, and for a time play remained near the home end.

The home side broke away and forced a corner, but Ballymena immediately turned defence into attack and raced towards McDonald, Murphy having hard lines with a fast ground shot which went behind.

Ards took the lead after 25 minutes when, following an opening by Burns, McKeen fisted out from Gough. Sandy Patton got on the rebound and shot onto the net.

Both Gough and Davidson missed good chances of scoring immediately afterwards, and five minutes from the interval Ballymena broke away, and John Murphy capped a nice run on the left by scoring the equalising goal. Just afterwards McDonald blocked a fine fine drive from Howard.

Murphy send wildly over the bar when well placed, and Totten had some difficulty at the other end, while Davidson sent just past the upight, McKeen saving at full length from Totten, and McNinch relieved with a kick to touch.

Ards claimed territorial advantage for a time, but Cassidy relievedthe pressure by sending Kilpatrick away. Ards were soon on the attack again, and Davidson beat McNinch and sent across to Gough, but the latter's centre went abegging.

Ballymena progressed on the left, and McDonald conceded a corner saving from Murphy, while he afterwards cleared from Howard.

Ballymena went ahead after twenty minutes, Sidney Howard turning a centre from Kilpatrick into the net. Two minutes later Wilfie Davidson equalised from Patton's cross.

McKeen and Davidson were both injured, but while the latter soon recovered, McKeen had to be carried to the pavilion, Howard taking his place in goal.

Although their forced were depleted Ballymena attacked, and Murphy struck the base of the upright with McDonald beaten, Vance cleared. Howard saved well in quick succession from Gough, Burns and McGee.
