Match Report

BALLYMENA United saw off Warrenpoint Town at Stangmore Park thanks to first half goals from David Cushley and Allan Jenkins, sandwiched either side of a red card for Point's Shaun Parr.

It was the hosts who threatened first, Daniel Hughes raced clear after a lovely through ball from Liam Bagnall but the striker's chipped effort was hooked off the line by the retreating Johnny Taylor. Stephen Hughes then shot just wide as Warrenpoint Town enjoyed a lively opening to the game. Hughes again found himself through on goal just moments later but Stuart Addis was on hand to deny the opportunity with his leg and keep the scores level in the process.

United then began to impose themselves on the game and scored with their first meaningful shot on goal on 28 minutes. Captain Allan Jenkins laid the ball off to winger David Cushley, who stepped inside from the right and unleashed an unstoppable left footed drive into the top corner of the goal, giving Johnny Parr no chance. A superb strike from the in-form Ballymena playmaker, who has now scored for the fourth successive game.

Five minutes later the game began to get away from Warrenpoint when midfielder Shaun Parr was red carded after two cautionable fouls, the second of which was a needless challenge in the middle of the park. United made their numerical advantage count right on the stroke of half time with a flowing team move. Left back Aaron Stewart demonstrated excellent control to bring the ball out of the air, before David Cushley exchanged passes with Allan Jenkins, the latter of whom side footed past Johnny Parr before celebrating wildly with the jubilant Sky Blue fans behind the goal.

With the match effectively over at the break, the second period was a much quieter affair, memorable perhaps only for the extortionate number of times United were caught offside. One such flagging offence denied the Sky Blues from making it three, when midfielder Gary Thompson was adjudged to be offside seconds before slotting the ball home.

Ruairi Devlin's through ball gave Stephen Hughes a chance to score a late consolation but his drilled effort was palmed away by Stuart Addis, securing a memorable away win for his side in the process.

Warrenpoint will be disappointed with today's showing, and will point to the first half dismissal of Shaun Parr as the key turning point. As for Ballymena, well their impressive run of form continues as they look forward to an intriguing home clash with Ballinamallard United next Saturday (3pm).
