Match Report

Ballymena and Ards met at he Showgrounds on Christmas Day before a good attendance.

Midfield play characterised the opening exchanges, and when Ballymena's first chance came off-side spoiled the movement. Murphy got away up the left wing, and when Garrett tackled him he crossed the ball in to Shiels, but the burley Barrett eased the pressure. Cassidy placed well up the centre for Shiels to connect, but Barrett eased the pressure. Cassidy placed well up the centre for Shiels to connect, but Barrett had sized up the situation and ran the Ballymena leader offside.

Ards made ground for the first time, and R. Gough tested Shannon. Then McCambridge lobbed a great shot over the bar. Play now travelled quickly from end to end and each side received a corner, but both were abortive. At the end of ten minutes' play the Ards forwards again got going, and Jimmy Turnbull fired in a swerving shot which curled into the net, leaving Shannon well beaten.

Following a try by Cassidy at the other end the visitors attacked, and McDiarmid was obliged to concede two corners in quick succession. Nothing came off them, however, and the Ballymena forwards raced to the other end, where an Ards man handled the ball inside the penalty area but the incident mustn't have caught the notice of the referee. Another corner to Ballymena was fruitless.

Twenty minutes from the start William Devan scored the vistors' second goal after Shannon had run out of his charge. The homesters had a grand chance to do something a few minutes later when Shiels shot and the goalie saved, following which McCambridge missed at point blank range.

Ballymena resumed in lively fashion, attacking at once, and both Shiels and McCambridge had tries but the shots were charged down. Good work of the Ballymena right saw Cassidy in possession, but his shot was saved by the goalie. A minute later Kilpatrick sent the ball across goal, and three or four of his colleagues all failed to connect.

However, Ballymena kept attacking and at length had their efforts rewarded when Kilpatrick executed a neat movement almost at the upright and send across for James McCambridge to head past Casey into the net.

Ballymena did most of the attacking in his half, but the Ards goal seemd to bear a charmed life after this. It was puzzling sometimes how it escaped further downfall. With only a few minutes to go, Ards scored their third goal per Robert Gough after McNinch had failed to clear.
