Match Report

BALLYMENA United lost out to Glentoran by the odd goal in seven on a wet and windy day at the Showgrounds on Saturday.

Ballymena started well, and took the lead on 23 minutes. A superb forward pass by David Cushley was expertly finished by Alan Teggert who beat the offside trap and slid the ball past Elliot Morris in the Glentoran goal to the delight of the home support. United should have doubled their advantage minutes later when Tony Kane's free kick was struck against the bar from six yards by captain Allan Jenkins.

Jenkins' miss appeared to lift the visitors spirits, who had been disappointing up to that point. A spell of Glentoran pressure resulted in an equaliser on 38 minutes, an excellent turn and shot by Jordan Stewart from the edge of area drew plenty of applause from the delighted Glens fans. The sides went into the break level with United rather miffed that they did not have the lead.

The home side appeared to rest on their laurels after a decent first half, allowing Glentoran to open up a two goal advantage within seven minutes of the restart. Ryan O'Neill's long free kick was flicked on by Mark Miskimmin in the direction of Jim O'Hanlon, who showed some fancy footwork before rifling the ball home past Stuart Addis to give the visitors the lead. The East Belfast side extended their lead just minutes later when Richard Clarke turned expertly, laying the ball off for Marcus Kane to score a dipping shot from just outside the area, a superb finish.

Alan Teggert went to close to reducing the arrears before he turned provider, crossing for substitute Gary Liggett to head United back into the game. The home support urged their team forward in he hope of an equaliser, but the Sky Blues were caught on the break as Jordan Stewart outsprinted the United defence and shot left footed past Stuart Addis to in effect wrap up the points for the Glens.

United did pull a further goal back deep in injury time through the lively Alan Teggert but in truth it was no more than a consolation on yet another frustrating afternoon for the Sky Blues. An inability to convert chances and a leaky defence is not a recipe for success and the sooner United can rectify this the better. Next up is a daunting trip to Solitude to take on champions Cliftonville.
