Match Report

GLENTORAN extended their good run of form at the Showgrounds tonight as they defeated the home side 3-1.

Both teams had a series of corners in the opening minutes, but it was Steven Gordon who scored the first goal of the game on 11 minutes, getting on the end of a cross to head home. David Scullion put the visitors two goals up on 13 minutes, chipping the stretching Tim Allen in the United goal.

It was just the start the home side didn't need, two defensive errors leaving them fighting an uphill battle for the rest of the game. The Glens had much of the possession from then on in, but United looked like they may make another remarkable comeback as a cross from Stephen McBride was headed out to Tony Kane who put the ball low into the net just before half-time.

United had a good chance 5 minutes into the second half with Jim Ervin crossing from the right and Cushley just unable to rise high enough at the near post. The Braidmen weren't helped by an injury to new defender Paddy McNally who was replaced by another new signing in Eamon McAllister.

Both sides felt there was some poor officiating as several players were deemed to be offside when they looked to be in onside positions, but frustration was growing as the half went on. Eventually the East Belfast men put the game beyond doubt when a Steven Gordon pass to Curtis Allen freed up some space and allowed the striker to seal the points with just over 6 minutes remaining.
