Match Report

BALLYMENA United suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat at the hands of Glentoran at The Oval on Saturday as the Sky Blues' poor run of form continued.

The hosts threatened first, Curtis Allen found himself clear on goal but a heavy first touch saw the ball run away from him allowing Dwayne Nelson to collect and halt the danger. The ex-Coleraine striker had another great chance moments later, but his powerful effort crashed against the crossbar after cutting in from the left.

Allen was involved in all of Glentoran's forward play and almost set up team mate Jordan Stewart for the opener, only for Dwayne Nelson to produce a stunning save from point blank range. On 34 minutes Jim O'Hanlon was guilty of blowing a huge chance to give his side the lead, blasting wide from inside the box when well placed to score. Curtis Allen forced another good save out of Nelson as the first half drew to a close, with a few teasing crosses into the box by Tony Kane the most United could muster in a lacklustre opening period.

Dwayne Nelson was Ballymena's only stand out performer and produced another top save on 46 minutes to deny Curtis Allen yet again as the home side ramped up the pressure. In a rare United break away, substitute David Cushley played through Alan Teggert but the winger's chipped effort was hooked away from danger by Glentoran defender Jay Magee despite beating goalkeeper Elliot Morris.

The hosts relentless pressure paid off on 65 minutes when Jordan Stewart took advantage of Tony Kane's decision to keep the ball in play rather than allowing it to go for a corner. Stewart stole the ball from Kane and picked out Stephen Gordon in the box whose shot was blocked but fell nicely into the path of Jim O'hanlon to steer the ball in and give the Glens a deserved lead.

On 69 minutes it was two, Niall Henderson's cross was slotted home by Curtis Allen as he finally got the better of Dwayne Nelson. As the game neared its conclusion United seemed to run out of ideas and lost defensive shape, allowing Jordan Stewart to score a late double and add some gloss to the scoreline. His first came about as a result of a smart finish from Kym Nelson's right sided cross on 88 minutes before a flowing injury time team move saw the youngster expertly control Fra McCaffrey's pass and turn the ball in to the joy of the home support.
